Joseph Green is a young boy who replaces James Howard as John Manly's assistant. During his tenure caring for Black Beauty, he accidentally gives the horse a pail of cold water to drink and neglects to give him a blanket after a lengthy ride, thus resulting in the horse becoming ill.
