Mal Dean was born in 1941 in Widnes, near Liverpool.

As a musician, he played trumpet and led the jazz band Mal Dean's Amazing Band.

As an artist, his distinct illustrations appeared on numerous album coveres, as well as Melody Maker and New Worlds. He is probably best known as the preferred illustrator for Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius stories.

He died of cancer in 1974, survived by his wife, Libby Houston.
