We gather certain information regarding your visit and use of the site.
You may enter as much information regarding yourself as you wish, provided there is a field for it in our user account system. However, all we require is a valid email address, a unique username, and a secure password. There is no obligation to associate your WhatCharacter account to any other service, though we do make such integrations possible.
Your personal information will be used to contact you. You may opt in or out of mass communications; however, we reserve the right to contact you directly for matters pertaining to your individual account and usage of the site.
Will will comply with law enforcement requests for user information only in situations in which we are compelled to do so by law.
We reserve the right to share any user information with our legal counsel for relevant matters.
Due to the nature of the site, it may contain information of real, live people. One of these people may be you. While we will do everything in our power to ensure that the data uploaded is accurate and of public interest (that is, appearing in a published document catalogued by this site, or appearing in any other publicly accessible system), there may be information you feel violates these principles. If that is the case, please contact us by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will take your concerns seriously. However, we will not entertain such requests as made by a third party, unless that third party legally represents the alleged injured party. Any information derived from fictionalized versions of real people (e.g., George W. Bush’s appearance in Doonesbury) will be indicated as fiction where appropriate. As a rule, real people should only be included if they are mentioned or referenced in a work, or are themselves part of the creative team for a work.
As a user of the site, your username and any information you have made public in conjunction with that account, will be linked to that user account, including additions of catalog information, edits of catalog information, and posts made via the site’s communication platform.
Terms of Service
WHATCHARACTER.COM IS PRESENTED "AS IS" AND ANY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE DISCLAIMED. IN NO EVENT SHALL WHATCHARACTER.COM, ITS OWNERS, AFFILIATES, OR ASSOCIATES BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLDUING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE GOODS OR SERVICES; LOSS OF USE, DATA, OR PROFITS; OR BUSIENSS INTERRUPTION) HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY, WHETHER IN CONTRACT, STRICT LIABILITY, OR TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE OR OTHERWISE) ARISING IN ANY WAY OUT OF THE USE OF THIS WEBSITE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE.
You are an adult, or at least are 13 years of age. If you are under the age of 13, you may not create an account on the site. Any accounts created by children under the age of 13 will be suspended. By using this site, you are agreeing that you meet the minimum age requirements set out by this site. If you are a minor, you are also agreeing that you have your parents’ and/or legal guardians’ permission to use this site.
Ultimately, you accept full responsibility for your actions on the site. Please do not share any private information with other users, as we are not responsible for what these other users do with that information. Likewise, do not post private information about other people. This includes users and non-users alike. While we do make it possible to track a wide range of metrics regarding people, you agree that you will use these fields responsibly, and in the best interests of the people whose information you are providing. You agree that when entering information about real, living people, you will not enter intentionally false information, or enter information that is not of public concern. You agree to not use WhatCharacter.com or its affilated sites as a platform to publish or disseminate defamatory or private information.
You will not create more than one account to subvert any intentional limitation put in by the system, nor will you not create multiple accounts to give the impression that you are multiple people on the site, for whatever benefit that may provide you. As a general rule, you will not create multiple accounts unless you have a perfectly legitimate reason to do so. We reserve the right to contact you regarding why, if you did, you created multiple accounts, and reserve the right to terminate any accounts we deem to not be legitimate. Legitimate examples include: a home account and a work account, an account for each person in your household, a regular account and a beta account, and such similar things, provided you do not use them abusively.
You will not create an account for the purpose of “name squatting,” that is, in an attempt to gain commercial or other economic benefit by offering for sale or trade a user name. Why you would want to do this here is completely baffling, but you aren’t allowed to do it. If we catch you doing it, we reserve the right to change your username.
You will not impersonate another person, even for satirical purposes. Impersonation involves adopting a persona of another individual, sometimes for some tangible gain, and sometimes for humorous purproses. We expect you not to impersonate people who are not you, and reserve the right to modify accounts that appear to be doing this.
You will not create a public facing username that is offensive. WhatCharacter.com staff are the final judges of offensive. Please refrain from using vulgarities and derogatory epithets and similar terms in your username. We reserve the right to change your username if we deem it to be offensive.
If you discover an exploit to any established rule, you agree to report it to us immediately. You may file a bug report by sending an email to email@example.com. You will be rewarded for being the first to report such problems. likewise, if you are found to be exploiting any feature of the website, we may at our discretion, terminate your account.
If your account is terminated, you will not create a new one without express permission from us. Terminated accounts will not have any financial transactions refunded.
When engaging in the site’s communication platforms, you agree not to publish advertisements. There may be a section of the communication platforms designated for such, but we reserve the right to revoke this privilege if negatively affects our site or our members.
If you must argue with other users, you will keep it professional. Ad-hominem attacks never win arguments, and the people who use them are stupid (that last independent clause was a joke). Combat the ideas, not the people saying them. Also understand that your opinions are not you, and that if others argue with you, they are not attacking you. People will disagree, and they may disagree with things you think are perfectly rational. Since you’re so rational, please understand that, instead of trying to stifle another’s free expression of their ideas in counter to your own. We reserve the right to ban users from the communication platforms (temporarily or permanently), and may, if the user is problematic, ban the user from the site.
You agree that you will not post pornographic, violent, hateful, or other harmful material to the site. We reserve the right to disallow the cataloging of such works as well, and may, at our discretion, allow such in a limited capacity. If we do allow such content, we will also provide a flag to indicate as much, hiding the content to all users who have not explicitly enabled the flag, so that the website may be considered safe for general use.
We respect the rights granted under reasonable application of copyright and trademark laws. As such, you agree to not post content that violates copyright or trademark rights. If you discover something that you feel violates your copyright or trademark rights, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please provide the following information:
- An electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the exclusive rightsholder allegedly infringed,
- Identification of the copyrighted work or works claimed to have been infringed,
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit us to locate the material, such as the URL or URLs of the pages,
- Information reasonably sufficient to permit us to contact the complaining party, such as an address, telephone number, and, if available, an electronic mail address at which the complaining party may be contacted,
- A statement that the complaining party has a good faith belief that the use of the material in the matter complained of is not authorized by the copyright holder, its agent, or the law, and that it falls outside of fair use as defined by copyright law,
- A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the holder of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
We will review your concern and may, if necessary, share it with our counsel and share any complaints with a legal threat clearing house such as Chilling Effects. Legitimate complaints will result in the offending material being modified or deleted to be in accordance with law. You agree that you will attempt to communicate with us prior to engaging in litigation, and we agree to take all complaints seriously, initially. We reserve the right to seek damages under existing laws for abuse of DMCA Takedown notices and related laws.
By posting information on WhatCharacter.com, you grant to us a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sublicensable right to make use of that information in any venue or media, online or offline.
By entering information to our catalog, you agree to grant any rights to the aggregated data to WhatCharacter.com and its owners. We reserve the right to track user contributions. You agree to make all contributions in good faith.
You agree that you will not use the site excessively. At some time, we may release an API, and at that time, you may make your API calls. In the meantime, please limit the usage of technologies such as scrapers and robots to the frequency of a normal human user. Please respect the rules set out in our robots.txt file, and please credit us for any information you get from our site.
If you would like to develop an application integrating with all or parts of WhatCharacter, please let us know by sending an email to email@example.com. We’d like to know, and can give valuable advice. Of course, we may also say "please don't," and you agree to respect that.
If you have any questions regarding these terms and conditions, or something is not made clear, please feel free to ask us either via the communication platform, or by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you think of a clever way to circumvent our system or our rules, please use common sense and respect the spirit of the rule. As we’ve already established, you’re an adult, or at least 13 years of age.
