Sohrab is the biological son of Hassan. After his parents die, Sohrab is sold as a slave to Hassan's former bully Assef.

During Amir's visit to Pakistan, he discovers Sohrab's state. He frees him from his slavery and adopts him, being the boy's biological uncle.

During the trials of legalizing Sohrab's adoption and immigration to the United States, Sohrab loses hope, attempting to kill himself with a razor, not wishing to return to the life he once knew.

He survives the attempt, but not without physical and emotional scars. He refrains from talking for a while. Gradually, he warms up to his adoptive parents and his new life. Amir and he begin to fly kites together, with Amir running the kite for Sohrab.
