Guph was an old Nome. After the unfortunate demise of previous generals of Ruggedo, the Nome King, he volunteers to help the Nome King rebound from his past embarrassment at the hands of Dorothy and company.

Showing no fear, he stands up the Nome King and is recruited as a General. He then goes on to recruit the Whimsies, the Growleywogs, and the Phanfasms, enlisting them to help wage war against Oz.

After the deposition of the Ruggedo, and the elevation of Kaliko to King, Guph in turn was given the title of Chamberlain.
