Claudius was the king of Denmark after his brother, Hamlet, died under mysterious circumstances. He achieved this distinction by marrying the king's widow, Gertrude.

However, Claudius' nephew, also named Hamlet, suspected foul play, and investigated the late king's death to discover it to be a murder instead with all signs pointing to Claudius.
