Benjamin Ward Baum, born January 3, 1821, married Cynthia Ann (née Stanton). Together, they had nine children, the seventh of which was L. Frank Baum.

Baum was a businessman, making his fortune by selling oil during the Pennsylvania oil rush.

He died on February 14, 1887.
